Michaelis Family Mysteries

Where Was Henri Michaelis? - Henri landed in America in August of 1847. But our first record of him is 5 years later when he married Catherine Ruf in 1851 in Indianapolis. He's not listed in the 1850 census for Indiana, so where did Henri spend his first 5 years in America?

What Happened to Rupert Michaelis? - Shortly after the turn of the century Henri's son Rupert walked into his brother Joseph's saloon in Indianapolis and made the comment that he had "itchy feet" and was going to take off. He was never seen or heard from again, leaving behind a wife and son. What happened to Rupert?

Missing Michaelis Lines - My 2g. grandfather Henri Michaelis of Luxembourg came to America in 1847. Three of his brothers and two nephews also came to America later on. Of these, I only have decendent info on two brothers, the other branches still being "lost". Here is what I know.

  • John Michaelis - brother - arrived July 1853. Settled in Indianapolis.
    Descendents known & documented.
  • Pierre Michaelis - brother - arrived abt. 1854. Died Aug. 1855, Logansport, IN.
    No known descendents, died single.
  • Jean Baptist Michaelis - brother - arrival unk. Known to be in St. Louis in Jan of 1886.
    Descendents unknown
  • Nicolas Michaelis - nephew - arrived Feb 1881, Naturalized Dec 1882, Cass Co., ND.
    Descendents unknown.
  • Peter Michaelis - nephew - arrived May 1880, Naturalized May 1884, Cass Co., ND.
    Descendents unknown.
  • I also suspect that one of Henri's neice's also came to America and settled in ND, but have yet find the proof.
